Here we are, a question from Streett Jacobs. "Do you think that Derek Jeter has a chance at going to the Red-Sox. We all know that it is a likely possibility. If the Red Sox do pick up Derek Jeter, how will the fans react, Do think Jeter is worth the money and the talent for the red sox and do you think the red sox will have a problem with Derek Jeter disrespecting the Sox like the Randy Moss incident?"
I think he has a very minimal chance of going to Boston. Honestly, as diehard Red Sox fan, I would love to see him in red and white, but it doesn't seem at all likely. He's the best shortstop on the market, and if talks between him and the Yankees break down, which they might, then the Sox would have a large chance of getting him. However, their only chance is if the talks break down, and even then they would have steep competition to get Jeter. The fan reaction depends on the fan. If you're a long time Red Sox fan who yells when they lose and is drunk when they go to Fenway, then you might not like to see him in Boston since you are a Yankee-hater. A new age fan, like myself, and one that is interested in trades and such as in well as games and is smart about baseball ,than you would certainly like to see him in Boston. I don't see there being a big outcry or anything if he signs, but there will be fans who won't like seeing him in the Boston uniform. I think he is worth the money and talent, but depending on how many years you sign him for.
According to sources, Jeter is looking for a six year deal. That's an awful deal to give a declining, albeit talented, aging shortstop. Look at a 3 year deal or maybe even a 4 year deal and you are fine. I think for that many years, he is fine, but for more, he's an enormous risk. It also depends on how much money he wants. If he wants 30 million a year, than that's a no-no, but 10 t0 15 would be alright. I think the Red Sox won't sign someone like that to a very risky investment, but they do have an average chance at getting him.
As for him acting like Randy Moss, it is unlikely that he will, and anything he would say would be the product of a fan harassing him or him just blowing his top. That's not in Jeter's character; he's the exact opposite of Randy Moss. Behavior like that would only happen if Jeter was antagonized or something, or if he was struggling and was receiving criticism. But he is no Randy Moss, and all should be fine for Derek Jeter if he comes to Boston.
Excellent question Streett, thanks.
