Last night, Beckett couldn't hold it together as a four run 6th inning killed the Red Sox hopes of winning the game. The signature moment of Monday's came with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, the game still hanging in the balance. Unfortunately, it was a very fluky play. With the Red Sox down by a run, Robert Andino hit a drive to deep center. Jacoby Ellsbury sprinted to the wall, looking to make a Willy Mays-esque catch. And he did. But that was only for an instant. A split-second after he made the catch, he slammed into the wall, and the ball squirted out of his glove. Andino raced around the bases. When he crossed third and headed home, it looked like he would be out. But catcher Jarrod Saltamalacchia couldn't handle Pedroia's relay, and by the time he could recover, it was too late. The home run sank the Red Sox. It was their 19th loss in 25 games, and their one game lead in the wild card vanished with the Rays beating the Yankees 5-2. Both teams have the same record with two games left; 89-71. The Red Sox haven't won two straight games since late August, but that needs to change right now. If there is a play-in game, it would be at 4:07 at Tropicana Field since Tampa Bay won the season series. The ALDS would start Friday at 5:07, whether we're playing the Rangers or the Tigers.
First, we have to make it to the ALDS. The 9 game lead that was there on September 3rd has been fully erased, and with two games left, the Red Sox need to complete their see-saw season on a high note. If they can't make the playoffs, it may be titled the worst collapse in the history of baseball. No one wants that caption under their team. Tonight, Eric Bedard will face Zach Britton as he pitches against his former team. Bedard is 1-2 with a 3.63 ERA with the Red Sox, however, his deepest start was 6 innings. And to make matter a little more ominous, he didn't get out of the third inning in his last start. And it was against the Orioles. Britton, on the other hand, is trying to cap off a succesful rookie season. If he gets the win tonight, his record will be 12-10, not bad for an Oriole of any age, because their hitting isn't something to write home about. Also, note that Saltamalacchia isn't starting tonight, giving the job to rookie Ryan Lavarway.
Rays are playing the Yankees tonight, and the pitching matchup is Bartolo Colon against Rays rookie Jeremy Hellickson. Hellickson has had a tremendous rookie season for the Rays, going 13-10, but with a stellar 2.90 ERA. This matchup definitely favors the Rays, as they teed off against Colon the last time he started against the Rays. Nevertheless, the Red Sox cannot rely on the Yankees to win. Their destiny is in their hands.
